SYNOPSIS

Hundreds of years ago, the Selkies made a deal with the sea witch: they would have the sea for as long as she allowed it, and when the time came, she would call in all their debts at once. Many people assumed that day would never come. Those people were wrong.

When the Luidaeg—October “Toby” Daye’s oldest and most dangerous ally—tells her the time has come for the Selkies to fulfill their side of the bargain, and that Toby must be a part of the process, Toby can’t refuse. Literally. The Selkies aren’t the only ones in debt to the Luidaeg, and Toby has to pay what she owes like anyone else. They will travel to the fabled Duchy of Ships and call a convocation of the Selkies, telling them to come and meet the Luidaeg’s price…or face the consequences.

Of course, nothing is that simple. When Dianda Lorden’s brother appears to arrest Dianda for treason against the Undersea, when a Selkie woman is stripped of her skin and then murdered, when everything is falling apart, that’s when Toby will have to answer the real question of the hour.

Is she going to sink? Or is she going to swim?

MY THOUGHTS

Whenever I pick up the next installment in the October Daye series it feels like coming home. A fellow October lover said those words to me and they could not be more true. When you’ve read 12 books and are anticipating the 13th title you know you’re a big fan.

The October Daye series is my ultimate urban fantasy series. When I found these books for the first time LAST YEAR I was stunned I hadn’t heard of Seanan McGuire in all my years working at a bookstore. It’s because my Chapters Indigo had 1 copy maybe 2 copies and they were in mass market and so easy to miss. I don’t know if this is an excuse but I am still surprised I didn’t hear of it! Urban fantasy is my go to guilty pleasure genre. I just love it so much. So naturally I was bound to love October.

Most people are superstitious about the number 13 but I kinda like it. My parking spot is #13 and I kinda feel lucky haha! Well, this is the 13th October book and I cannot get enough! Book 11 was a bit of a drag but book 12 brought things back for and 13 was a hit! I love how McGuire reveals just a bit more of October’s world and the past in every book. I usually love coming up with my own theories but I love going in blind with this series.

I can’t wait for more. I hope the road to October’s ending is a long one because these books make me feel warm and fuzzy inside whenever I read them.

Thank you Penguin Canada for sending a copy to me in exchange for an honest review.

  1. 13 books in the same series!!?? Wow! I’ve never heard of them, but they sound really good! Do you hve to read them in order? Does it follow the story of the same main characters through the 13 books?

    1. Oh my gosh it’s my fave urban fantasy series! You do have to read them in order. Once you hit book 3 midstride you’ll be addicted. I binged them all in 9 months 😂 and she has 4 more scheduled for sure!

      1. Omg! That’s really impressive! Are they very long? Like, what’s the average page number? I’m really considering these because I loooove urban fantasy, but I need to know if I can finish them before I’m 90. I’m a slow reader 😂

        1. Loool before you’re 90! They’re about 300 pages. And the mass markets go by real quick I also read a lot on my ereader and they flew by. Also the characters are like this rag tag family that assembles from book to book and you just wanna squish them. It’s also got a bit of gore in it and it’s action packed! Love them so much!

          1. Ahhhh! I’ll definitely give the first one a try! 300 isn’t that bad. Most fantasy books are like 700 and they are the death of me. I can’t bring myself to finish The Name of the Wind because it feels like ten books in just one XD.
Anyway! Thanks for that recc! 😀
