SYNOPSIS

Seventeen-year-old Aderyn (“Ryn”) only cares about two things: her family, and her family’s graveyard. And right now, both are in dire straits. Since the death of their parents, Ryn and her siblings have been scraping together a meager existence as gravediggers in the remote village of Colbren, which sits at the foot of a harsh and deadly mountain range that was once home to the fae. The problem with being a gravedigger in Colbren, though, is that the dead don’t always stay dead.

The risen corpses are known as “bone houses,” and legend says that they’re the result of a decades-old curse. When Ellis, an apprentice mapmaker with a mysterious past, arrives in town, the bone houses attack with new ferocity. What is it about Ellis that draws them near? And more importantly, how can they be stopped for good?

Together, Ellis and Ryn embark on a journey that will take them deep into the heart of the mountains, where they will have to face both the curse and the long-hidden truths about themselves.

MY THOUGHTS

I have a confession to make my fellow readers. If a book has the word “bone” in it I will 100% be curious and will probably pick it up. Now that I’m thinking about this let’s see how many books I can name with “bone” in it that I loved. Okay here goes! Shadow & Bone, Daughter of Smoke & Bone, Down Among The Sticks & Bones, The Lovely Bones, Speaking From Among The Bones, okay I think I could just keep going on and on and on but you get the point. Now that we have some background knowledge you can see why I was SO excited for The Bone Houses!

The moment I read the first chapter I was hooked. I loved the setting, the idea of these kids trying to survive after their father passes by burying the bones of the dead. So interesting! So creepy! So here for this book!

I really connected with the main characters and the dual POV worked well for The Bone Houses. Aderyn (how cool is that name) was just awesome. She was great because her mannerisms weren’t forced and she was just so likeable. Ellis was harder to like but he completely grew on me. I mean, he’s a mapmaker. He had me there. The setting definitely spoke to me. If a book has chapters set in a tavern I will probably be drawn in. There was adventure and intrigue and I just really enjoyed this one. Enough to make me want to get the finished copy for myself! That’s high praise my friends. Oh, and it’s a standalone! Yay! I love standalone books because YA is kind of congested with fantasy series, am I right or am I right??

If I haven’t convinced you to read it yet I know this next sentence will – you will meet the coolest fucking goat ever.
